This review may post twice, but this is a solid pomade. Definitely recommend watching the video to see how to scoop this stuff out as I didn't watch it and was having a hard time scooping this out and breaking it down. I purchased the barbershop scent which is kind of like baby powder, but disappears when broken down for me. Hair feels very soft due to the mango butter, etc. which is an added bonus. Washes out clean and holds firm-ish. Shine is neutral which is fine for my short/medium pushed back hair...would definitely recommend this to anyone but remember, watch the video or just be patient...a few things I failed on! I've already expressed my opinion about this product in the Clean Cut Citrus version, so instead of repeating myself I will only say that this pomade is unbelievably awesome and you should try it RIGHT NOW! :D
Here, with the same fantastic performance comes a different scent, called a Barbershop - very clean, masculine and somehow reminding me of baby powder. Really nice and comfortable to sniff, but I slightly prefer the CCC one :) (Posted on 5/17/2017)

This pomade was amazing. It was very creamy and easy to use. The breakdown does take a little bit of rubbing but it definitely completely breaks down. A solid firm hold, hair stayed in place all day. 5/5 amazing product. (Posted on 3/31/2017)

The barbershop scent is very clean, reminds me of a fresh and clean baby powder. I think I'll go for the clean cut citrus next time though. The build up on this product is so clean. Just rinsing my hair in the shower, towel drying, and combing before bed leaves nothing but a clean soft feeling buildup in my hair that gets better and better each day. (Posted on 2/28/2017)

My hair profile:
I've medium thick, wavy hair. I wear a side part with a contour. At the moment, I’m using a brush with wild boar hair, a Denman brush plus a wide tooth comb (detangler). During styling, I use brushes most. Use a tangle teezer to avoid tug. More info on this handy tool: https://piw74.com/2016/07/16/combs-brushes-afro-picks-an-inventory/

Scent:
2 scent options: the clean cut citrus or a barbershop scent. Got the barbershop one: smells like an old school blend with notes of talcum, amber, bay rum and sandalwood grounded by an earthy, musky base. First opening the jar and putting my nose in: not really my thing but not bad either. Has a not so strong odor in the jar. In the hair: did catch many breezes, these were: not overwhelming, nor abrasive or troublesome. It is present in a agreeable manner, you won't forget it's there. Started to dig this smell! I've not tried the clean cut citrus but heard some good things about it.

Application process - result:
Style with clean hands, dry them well to avoid the product gets wet and molds, bacteria could be possible residents. Remove hairs, other dirt out of the container. Contains a preservative but keeping it clean is always the best. Application on damp hair for me on the first day of styling. I put 3 average amounts in my mane. Inside the jar, you meet a white pomade. Top layer plus layer beneath are hard to scoop but workable, didn't have to use my fingernail. Some force is requisite to remove product out of the jar. Small scoops work the best. Typical 'caterpillar shape licks' is what you get. Some pressure required breaking it down. First you get kind of a dry paste, breaking down further, texture gets a bit oily and buttery, not sticky/tacky. Prefer to break it down before the oiliness comes in, does not influence the efficiency of the pomade. The streaks as a result of that will vanish right after you move your hands and comb through the hair. Working it in: slight tension noticeable. Spreading evenly: no problem. Combing back: bit of a resistance, for a firm not overly grippy. The control this pomade provides, is good. Hair follows the combs without being forced into any direction, overall smooth and easy process. I guess it works this agreeable and facile because of the mango butter which is a very important component, it's nearly a mango based pomade (second ingredient after water). Weight in the hair: nice light weight feel. NHM firm tamed my cowlicks from the start and straightened my waves well. Pomade is slick, not much of those inconvenient flyaways/strays. Hair height: got some decent height with a good amount of volume but not that high for a firm, for my type of hair (wavy). Styling time: average. Looked back after about 40 minutes and my overall impression was: great. This translates itself in: not saggy, no hairs out of place or strays popping out, no cowlicks and waves winning the game. What I obtained is that slick, clean look I love. Pomade does not feel sticky or greasy. It is as we are used from NHM: well balanced, well made.

Shine:
According to the rating on the jar: 3 out of 5 = a good medium shine. Accurate in my opinion. Being a firm there's some good luster. Latter did not fade throughout the day. Nice detail: shinier than the medium water based. In that regard, it reminds me of Steve and Nichole Lockhart from Lockhart's authentic. They were looking for a way to fabricate a firm-heavy strength linked to a good amount of shine which reflects the greasy role of a classic pomade. Everyone knows that pomade, of course: the very noted Goon grease.

Hold - endurance:
Firm hold: a 4 out of 5. In my hair, it provides more of a medium-firm strength. Great endurance: NHM firm keeps the hair in place all day long. Didn't need to do real touch ups. It did not get saggy, no straying or cowlick issues, no splits or other things whatsoever. Waves did show up a tiny bit. Tested in colder temperatures (in the 30's), no strenuous physical activities, just a few walks. There was some sun, a tiny bit of wind present.

Restyling:
It's a non-drying water based which means you can easily restyle if you feel the need. I usually don't restyle, a few touch ups here and there is all I do. Doing the restyle test: easy, not much of a tension while restyling and still a good hold afterwards. My waves came through more.

Build up:
Very clean, very manageable as we are used of the NHM pomades. I applied on damp hair. Normally on wet hair but I got the impression damp works better with this one.

Washing out:
1 or 2 washes with shampoo as most unorthodox water based pomades of these days. It depends on the amount of pomade you put in and your type of hair as well. Easy to rinse and ideal for a one day commitment. Hair + scalp feel soft, healthy afterwards.

Hair, scalp issues:
None.

Similar pomade:
Shear revival's, Crystal lake (latest batch) according to James Bui/The pomp. Did not try the latest run, hence.

Hard/firm product, takes force to scoop it out of the jar but will break down and apply like Red House firm pomade.
Very similar to Red House in application to the hair, work it in well. I have thick hair so it takes some effort to get the best from it.
Would suit thinner hair for better hold but it works quite well for thicker hair.
Super lemon citrus smell which lasts throughout the day.
Worth owning. Expect firm hold pomades like these to need more manipulation in application. (Posted on 2/21/2017)

OK so...some people might think I'm crazy for saying this,,,but...I like this better than Shear Revival Crystal lake...it has a slight edge in performance in that it's a firm hold (personal preference), applies easier and isn't so greasy at the end of the day. the scent is out of this world...before I received the product I was reminiscing about the smell at Mario's barbershop when I was younger...when I got it and opened I was 12 again getting my hair cut by Mario...it's dead on barbershop smell! So if you like Crystal Lake then you will definitely like this! (Posted on 1/26/2017)

Right! SO...some of you might think I'm crazy for saying this ,but, Nostalgic Handmade Super water Based pomade is better than Shear Revival Crystal Lake...but not by much...The sent is dead on barbershop...before i even received the product I kept reminiscing what Mario's barbershop smelled like when I was younger...the second I opened that jar i was 12 again in Mario's shop...So the Super refers to the hold...it has a stronger hold than most pomades and that's the slight edge over crystal lake i was talking about...for me the hold is better thus its a better product but its all on personal opinion...also it's a bit easier to apply and it doesn't get so greasy as compared to crystal lake at the end of the day ...overall I'd give it 5/5 and if you like crystal lake you won't go wrong with Nostalgic Handmade Super water based pomade. With your index finger in the palm of your hand, breakdown the pomade before spreading all over hands and applying to hair. Small scoops and warm hands do the trick! NOTE: This product may arrive with cracks in the top. This is a result of the high wax content and cooling process but does not affect performance at all or reflect a defective jar.
